Martin Strel is not an athlete. He is a fifty-plus, big bellied Slovenian man who drives whilst drunk and eats horse burgers. He's also and endurance swimmer, conquering the worlds largest rivers the Mississippi, the Danube and the Yangtze to draw attention to environmental issues. Journeying with his English speaking son Borut and director John Maringouin, he sets out to swim the Amazon, facing obstacles including carnivorous fish, rapids and toxic water pollution. Big River Man is a character study filled with humour, an edge-of-your-seat thrilling adventure and an awareness raising environment documentary that delivers on all fronts.

A Mongolian View
Our Shit Boxes have travelled to Mongolia as part of the Mongol Rally 2009. Bob Twells and Lee Tuffnell drove from Goodwood, UK to Ulanbataar, Mongolia in a Skoda and came 96th out of 550. We would like to congratulate them on their achievement and for using our trusty Shit Boxes to relieve them along the way.
Gotta love that view!

Golden Showers
New advertising campaign in Brazil encouraging it's citizens to conserve water by peeing in the shower. Brazilian environmental group SOS Mata Atlantica says the campaign, running on several television stations, uses humour to persuade people to reduce flushes. The group says if a household avoids one flush a day, it can save up to 4,380 litres (1,157 gallons) of water annually.

Recompute
Sustainable cardboard PC

Brenden Macaluso's entry in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition from earlier in the year; the cardboard-housed Recompute
Recompute case is made of corrugated cardboard which is recyclable and renewable. There are four low-impact manufacturing processes in it's assembly: Die cutting, gluing (with non-toxic white glue), printing and electronic assembly. Recompute uses only three major electronic components: A motherboard with processor & memory, power supply, and a hard drive - it's cardboard housing means it can be disassembled without tools, so the electronics and case can be easily recycled individually.

Who Invented the Toilet?
Myth: Thomas Crapper invented the toilet - although Thomas Crapper was a master plumber he had little or nothing to do with inventing the water closet (nor is the word crap derived from his name).
The earliest toilets so far found are those at Skara Brae in the Orkneys, which was occupied at about 3000 BC. In ancient India and parts of the Middle East public toilets that used water to wash away the waste have been known for over 4,000 years.
While toilets date back to ancient times, the modern toilet can be more accurately traced back to Sir John Harrington, godson of Queen Elizabeth I, and his invention called the Ajax (i.e. "a jakes"; jakes being an old slang word for toilet) - an indoor water closet. In 1596, Harington wrote a book called A New Discourse upon a Stale Subject: The Metamorphosis of Ajax (catchy title) about his invention, but at the time his water closet was universally ridiculed by his peers for being a rather useless invention. By all accounts Sir John and Queen Elizabeth were the only owners of a WC in their day.
The idea of a flushable toilet never completely disappeared, and in 1738 a valve-type flush toilet was invented by J. F. Brondel. Between 1738 and 1852 a number of designs were invented and patents registered, including the silent siphon discharge system and the s-trap (preventing the escaping smell of sewers) - a design that is basically the same as modern toilets with few modifications.
A London plumber by the name of Thomas Crapper bought the rights to manufacture a toilet design in the late 1800s and stamped the words ‘T Crapper & Co’ on the bowl of his toilets...
